Yolanda Update – Relief + Rehabilitation for Media Workers affected by Yolanda in Leyte and Samar

Summary of Actions and Updates:

  1. Immediate Financial Assistance (Relief) for food, shelter, transportation
    • Through the PMPI from the support of Misereor in Germany, PECOJON has provided initial immediate financial assistance of Php 3,000 to 13 journalists in Leyte and Samar.
  2. Temporary Work as stringers, writers and guides to international news agencies and humanitarian organizations:
    • Through the recommendation of PECOJON, five local reporters were hired by international news agencies as guides and translators in Tacloban.
      Through CCJD, two journalists were hired as researchers for disaster response survey in Tacloban.
      PECOJON assists local journalists in applying to ICRC by receiving resume and letter of intent through SMS, transcribing SMS to word file and sending application to ICRC. Local media are interested to apply as translators.
  3. Immediate Relief for Media Center
    • Through the initiative of the local media spearheaded by Imelda Magbutay and Jazmin Bonifacio, the DSWD has provided one tent at the Grand Stand to serve as a temporary Tacloban Media Center. We are raising money to purchase:
      • Generator set
        Mobile Internet
        Equipments – Laptop and Camera
        Mobile Phone
        Diesel Supply
        Communication Load Supply
      • PECOJON writes to ICRC for further tent support because water seeps in the DSWD tent.
  4. Trauma Clinic
    • Lago Maggiore Institute in Germany committed a Trauma Clinic on December 22-31, 2013 for Yolanda affected media in the Visayas. Dr. Sarah Monz and Psychologist Matthias Witzel financed their own flights for the trip. They are skipping Christmas in Germany and are spending it in Samar and Leyte.
  5. Rehabilitation Program for Rebuilding or Creating a Community Mass Media
    • A long-term programme to rehabilitate the local media
  6. Other Relief/Support
    • Goods gathered by Nef Luczon from DTCM & Aesthetikos Club of Mindanao University of Science & Technology (not yet distributed)
    • 6 boxes & cases of Alaska milk from Alaska Milk Company through Erik de Castro of Reuters Pictures (not yet distributed)
    • 1 pallet of medicines from PhilRelief (not yet received and distributed)
